Last Minute Mother’s Day Gifts

May 5, 2015

For all you procrastinators out there — present company included — a word to the wise: Sunday is Mother’s Day, and shit is about to get real. We’ve put our mothers through the ringer over the years, and it’s time to show dear ol’ Mom (Mom you’re not old) just how much you love her and how much you appreciate her patience while you blossomed into the amazing person you are today. You are amazing, right?

Here’s some gift options that are all $100 or less — except for that iPad case oops — and provide a wide variety of things to choose from. I’m particularly in love with those coral salad tongs. Salad tongs may seem like an odd present for Mommy dearest, but, I assure you, they are not. They are perfect and she will love them. So there.

I LOVE the blanket and the leather iPad case. Favorite memories….As you well know, I am not a mom. As the perennial childless one, it was my responsibility (and honor!) to host Mother’s Day for my mom and sister. My sister’s first Mother’s Day was four weeks after my niece was born. I did that brunch up right; flowers, food, booze, music! All was well in the Grud-Stein clan; mimosa’s were being consumed (full octane for me and mom, unleaded for the breastfeeding new mom!), stories were being shared and gift giving was about to commence. The anticipation was palpable. What would my sister get from her husband as a shiny new mom? (note: this family does not believe in push gifts – it was 1997 – no one had even heard of those!) As she opened the gift we were all on the edge of our seats. The package contained: gardening gloves, a small shovel, a small three pronged hoe, and small spade. (my sister has a green thumb like my mother – me, I kill pictures of flowers). This was a good and thoughtful gift….until my bro-in-law said: “See, Laura, now you have something to do and this will get you out of the house.” {insert world coming to a halt – did you just tell a new mom of a tiny screaming, wriggly, vomits, pooping child to get out of the house?} Only words uttered after that were me saying “next year, don’t speak after you give the gift.” Pass the champagne, please! Happy Mother’s Day!!!!
