Home Living, How to Speak Southern

No More Naked Windows

January 28, 2014

Wilson and I are hosting an engagement party for our friends Allie and Travis at our house in February. Instead of freaking out about how our house is half-decorated (and really half finished), I am using this as motivation to really decorate our little home. My mom has always said it is so important to host company at your house because it makes you finish those little updates that you’d never do just for yourself. Free advice from the ultimate Southern lady, you’re welcome.

A few things I’m focusing on in particular:

1. Painting and hanging some oils for our bedroom — don’t be impressed, I’m just going to throw paint on a canvas like I’m Jackson Pollock and call it a day

2. Purchase and hang drapes in our kitchen/dining room

3. Purchase a duvet for our bedroom

4. Make more updates to the loft, which include hanging that dang bird on our wall

I finally purchased window treatments for my kitchen. We have a bank of four beautiful windows in our quasi-dining room and but they are naked and desperately need some clothes. I found these fantastic drapes from the Marsha & Ash Etsy shop online. They carry a variety of bright patterns and textures for pillows, drapes, ottomans and even dog beds. If you are in the market for something similar, check them out.

I ordered the cream-colored linen drapes to keep the drapes muted but still luxurious. I am going to mount them with brass hardware and rings. I haven’t found any hardware yet that isn’t ridiculously priced but since I’m the little budget engine that could I know I will find them…

I chose the navy/white greek key pattern trim for the drapes. I have a lot of blues — mostly cobalt/aqua/royal mixes — in the kitchen and figured a navy would be a neutral blue to use to tie the different shades together.

I cannot wait to get the drapes and show you more pictures…

In other I’m-cheap-and-I-know-it news, one of the best things about throwing a fabulous dinner party is the leftovers. After my dinner throwdown I spiced up my Shrimp Scampi by mixing in jarred vodka sauce, — Trader Joe’s is the best — fresh cherry tomatoes and another sprinkle of fresh parsley. Don’t forget to enter my giveaway — there’s only a few days left!

I also got to enjoy the hydrangea centerpiece again too. Fresh flowers make me so happy. So do spray tans and wine.

Looks great! You can always paint the hardware to look brass 🙂 I’ve done that a time or two… It’s up high and no one will know the difference. Good luck!

Such a great point. I may have to do that because brass hardware is so pricey!!
